Whether you live in the country or the city, here are five books about farm life to transport you and your young readers.
- Farm Anatomy : The Curious Parts of Country Life is detailed and a deep dive for preschool aged children. It isn’t a quick read, thin picture book with 200+ pages. However, if you are interested in farm life this book is very informative, even for adults. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep this around on the bookshelf for older elementary or middle school aged kids to pick up and browse on their own time. The illustrations are captivating, and it would be easy to read a few pages at a time to a preschool aged child.
- The Hundred-Year Barn by Patricia MacLachlan, an illustrated picture book marketed to ages preschool- grade 3
- Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown, a board book, sturdy for toddlers and repeat bedtime readings of melodic rhyming text.
- Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm by Alice Provensen, a story book I read as a child, purchased for my children, and is the go-to purchase for other children (first birthdays, baby showers) to add to their home library. A must read!
- Everything But The Horse by Hollie Hobbie, an illustrated picture book marketed to ages preschool to grade 3, which I read to my daughter while she was going through her horse loving phase.
We are huge fans of stuffed animal puppets in our house. Classic, imagination inspiring, fun for all ages. They are versatile for playtime during the day, soft enough to cuddle at night and heirloom quality to last. Consider these following puppets to accompany your farm book reading adventures.
